CSV Header
A CSV header is the row of column names defined in the first line of a CSV file, letting later rows reference fields by name rather than by position.
Purpose
To provide a column-name mapping for CSV data so consumers reference fields by name, improving readability and robustness.
Mechanism
Each field in the first line is a column name, and later rows correspond to the names by position. RFC 4180 does not mandate a header line, but most tools treat the first line as the header. Parsers offer a hasHeader option.
Use cases
- Data export and import
- Spreadsheet exchange
- API CSV responses
