Connection Pool

A connection pool pre-creates and reuses database connections, avoiding frequent connection setup costs and controlling concurrent connection counts.

Purpose

To optimize database connection management, reduce latency, and prevent connection exhaustion.

Mechanism

At startup the application creates N connections in a pool; requests borrow a connection and return it after use. This avoids the TCP+TLS+authentication handshake overhead. Configure max connections, idle timeouts, and health checks. HikariCP/pgbouncer are common.

Use cases

  • Application performance optimization
  • Connection management
  • Resource pooling
