Comet
Comet is an umbrella term for web real-time push techniques, covering server-push patterns such as long polling, streaming iframes, and WebSocket.
Purpose
It delivered real-time push to web applications before WebSocket was standardized; today it has mostly been replaced by WebSocket and SSE.
Mechanism
Comet is a pattern rather than a protocol: long polling (requests held open), the forever iframe (a hidden streaming iframe), and XHR streaming (continuous push over a chunked response). The Bayeux protocol standardized Comet communication.
Use cases
- Historical real-time web
- Legacy IM and notifications
- Compatibility-focused push
