Catena
Catena is a memory-hard password hashing function designed by Buering et al., based on the Bit Reversal Graph, providing time-memory trade-off resistance.
Purpose
A password hashing function resisting GPU/ASIC parallelism and time-memory trade-off attacks; a PHC competition submission.
Mechanism
Multiple graph-based passes: each pass fills and traverses memory over the Bit Reversal Graph, depending on the full state of the previous pass. Parameter λ controls the number of passes, g controls memory.
Use cases
- Password hashing and storage
- PHC competition submission
- Memory-hard function
