Camel Case
Camel case joins multi-word identifiers with capitalized initials (e.g., userName or UserName); it is common in Java, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
Purpose
Provides a compact multi-word identifier naming style that stays readable in case-sensitive environments.
Mechanism
lowerCamelCase lowercases the first word and capitalizes the rest (userName); UpperCamelCase/PascalCase capitalizes every word (UserName). Java uses lower for methods and Upper for classes. JS/TS uses lower for variables and Upper for components/types.
Use cases
- JavaScript/TypeScript variables and functions
- Java method and class names
- JSON key names (in some cases)
- API field naming
Examples
- Input
user_nameOutputuserNamelowerCamelCase
Common errors
- Confusing lowerCamelCase with UpperCamelCase
- Follow language conventions: lower for variables, Upper for classes
