Brotli

Brotli is a web compression algorithm developed by Google, combining a built-in static dictionary with LZ77 and context Huffman coding; it compresses text 15-25% better than gzip.

Purpose

It serves as a more efficient HTTP Content-Encoding, speeding up web transfers, especially for HTML/CSS/JS.

Mechanism

It combines an LZ77 sliding window, second-order context Huffman coding, and a built-in 120KB static dictionary covering common web text fragments. Decoding is fast, and compression offers levels 0-11.

Use cases

  • HTTP content encoding
  • Web asset transfer
  • Font compression (WOFF2)
