BibTeX

BibTeX is LaTeX's bibliography management facility: .bib files store literature entries, \cite cites them, and \bibliography generates the reference list.

Purpose

To manage a bibliography database for LaTeX documents, automatically generating numbered and formatted reference lists from citations.

Mechanism

A .bib file contains @type{key, field={value}, ...} entries (article/book/inproceedings, etc.). BibTeX scans citations in the .aux file, extracts entries from the .bib file, and formats the .bbl output according to the .bst style.

Use cases

  • LaTeX bibliography management
  • Academic citation formatting
  • Literature databases
