Base64URL

Base64URL is the URL-safe variant of Base64, replacing + and / with - and _ and usually omitting the = padding; it is designed for URLs and file names.

Purpose

It lets Base64 output appear safely in URL paths, query parameters, and file names without extra percent-encoding.

Mechanism

It uses the same 6-bit grouping as standard Base64, but characters 62 and 63 of the alphabet become - and _; the = padding may be omitted (decoders restore it from the length).

Use cases

  • JWT token encoding
  • URL-safe data transfer
  • Binary identifiers in file names
