AsciiMath
AsciiMath is a lightweight formula language that approximates mathematical notation with ASCII characters, e.g., sqrt(x^2+y^2) for a square root, making formulas easy to type on a keyboard.
Purpose
To input mathematical formulas in pure ASCII without the complex syntax of LaTeX, suiting quick entry and embedding in Markdown.
Mechanism
A parser converts ASCII math expressions such as sum_(i=1)^n i and frac(a)(b) into MathML or HTML for rendering. A symbol mapping table maps ASCII strings to mathematical symbols.
Use cases
- Math input for Markdown
- Quick formula editing
- Online math communication
