Argon2i

Argon2i is the data-independent addressing variant of Argon2: its memory access pattern is independent of the password, resisting side-channel attacks.

Purpose

Delivers Argon2's memory hardness in side-channel-sensitive environments (e.g. shared cloud) without leaking password-dependent memory access patterns.

Mechanism

Same matrix filling as Argon2, but reference indices are generated by a data-independent pseudo-random function (based on the previous block), so the access pattern is fixed. Resists timing/cache side channels, but its time-memory trade-off resistance is slightly weaker than Argon2d's.

Use cases

  • Side-channel-safe password hashing
  • Cloud password storage
  • Recommended Argon2 variant
