Argon2
Argon2 is the password hashing function that won the Password Hashing Competition; it fills and traverses a memory matrix over multiple passes, providing strong memory hardness and time-memory trade-off resistance.
Purpose
Serves as the password hashing standard (RFC 9106), resisting GPU/ASIC parallel attacks and time-memory trade-offs — a modern replacement for bcrypt/scrypt.
Mechanism
Runs t passes over a p×m matrix: each block is computed by compression function G from the previous block and a pseudo-randomly chosen earlier block. Argon2d (data-dependent addressing), Argon2i (data-independent), Argon2id (hybrid).
Use cases
- Password hashing and storage
- PHC competition winning design
- RFC 9106 standard
