Anonymous Encryption
Anonymous encryption keeps the ciphertext from revealing the recipient’s identity: an adversary cannot tell whether a ciphertext is encrypted to Alice or to Bob.
Purpose
It hides the recipient in metadata-sensitive communications, protecting the anonymity of communication relationships.
Mechanism
Conventional public-key ciphertexts carry an identifier of the recipient’s public key; anonymous encryption applies key-anonymization techniques (e.g., group signatures, ring structures) so the ciphertext cannot be linked to any specific public key. Anonymous IBE is a typical construction.
Use cases
- Anonymous communication protocols
- Privacy-preserving email
- Anonymous whistleblowing systems
