AMQP
AMQP is an enterprise-grade message queue protocol that defines routing, queue, binding, and transaction semantics, implemented by RabbitMQ and others.
Purpose
It provides reliable, flexibly routed messaging between enterprise applications, with support for transactions, acknowledgments, and dead letters.
Mechanism
In AMQP 0-9-1, an exchange (direct/topic/fanout/headers) routes messages to a queue by binding key, and consumers ack or nack each message. AMQP 1.0 is a wire-format standard that decouples these semantics.
Use cases
- Enterprise message bus
- Asynchronous microservice communication
- Task queues
