Convertir between IPv4 and IPv6 address formats

Convertir IP addresses between dotted-decimal, hex, binary, and IPv6 representations. Understand IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses.

  1. 1

IPv4 addresses are 32-bit values shown as four decimal octets (192.168.1.1). IPv6 are 128-bit shown as eight hex groups (2001:db8::1). IPv4 can be embedded in IPv6 as ::ffff:192.168.1.1 (IPv4-mapped). Understanding these formats is essential for network configuration and debugging.

  2. 2
    Información de direcciones IP →

Look up an IP address to see its type (IPv4/IPv6), class, and range information. This helps identify whether an address is private, public, loopback, or multicast.

  3. 3
    Codificador hexadecimal →

Convertir an IPv4 address a its hexadecimal representation. 192.168.1.1 → 0xC0A80101. This is useful for packet analysis and low-level network programming

  4. 4
    Codificador binario →

Convertir an IP address a binary. 192.168.1.1 → 11000000.10101000.00000001.00000001. This reveals the network/host boundary and is useful for subnet calculation

Preguntas frecuentes

What is an IPv4-mapped IPv6 address?
It is an IPv6 address that embeds an IPv4 address: ::ffff:a.b.c.d (e.g., ::ffff:192.168.1.1). This allows IPv6 sockets to communicate with IPv4 hosts during the IPv6 transition. The first 80 bits are zero, next 16 are 1 (ffff), last 32 are the IPv4 address.
Why are there both IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 has 4.3 billion addresses, which are exhausted. IPv6 has 3.4×10^38 addresses, solving the shortage. IPv6 also has simplified header structure, no need for NAT, and built-in security (IPsec). The transition is ongoing — most networks support both (dual-stack).
