Transformation Model
XSLT applies a stylesheet (itself an XML document) to transform an input XML document into output. Templates match nodes using XPath patterns and produce output fragments. The xsl:apply-templates instruction recursively processes child nodes. Variables and parameters support parameterized templates. XSLT is declarative: the processor decides which templates to apply based on match patterns.

XSLT 1.0 is widely supported in browsers and libraries. XSLT 2.0 adds sequences, grouping, date/time functions, and stronger typing. XSLT 3.0 adds streaming for large documents, packages, and try/catch. Output methods include XML, HTML, and text. XSLT is commonly used for XML-to-HTML conversion, XML pipelines, and publishing workflows. Saxon is the leading XSLT 2.0/3.0 processor.
